Breaking News: Packages Held Captive Rescued

We interrupt our regular wedding programing to bring this breaking news. After being held captive for three days, two precious members of the Mister and Nina Wedding's family were heroically rescued by Mister.

The ordeal began Monday afternoon, when the mister found a ransom note about attempting to deliver two packages. Knowing she'd be at work when the second contact attempt would take place, Nina began running through her options in her head. She could try to contact them by phone or face them directly. She decided to wait, in case the proper authorities wanted to follow a different course of action.

Upon returning from work on Tuesday afternoon, she found another ransom note left for her, indicating a second contact attempt. The threat escalated at that point, with a final delivery attempt scheduled for the following day and, if it failed, both packages would be sent to meet their maker. Nina immediately made phone contact, but after two grueling hours, one of the captors let it slip that the packages "could not be found." Had they tried to escape on their own?

The following afternoon, the mister bravely took the ransom note and drove to a (not so) secluded location, about 40 minutes away, to meet them face to face. Upon trying to rescue the packages, the captors demanded a written statement signed by Nina. Fearing retaliation against her precious packages, Nina quickly faxed them a statement. It was the longest 15 minutes for Nina and the mister, as they waited for the success (or possible failure) of meeting such a demand.

To everyone's relief, the fax came in and the captors accepted such ransom and the mister was able to bring the packages home. The Wedding family was reunited later that evening.

The Dress Experience: Lessons Learned

Last weekend, my girls and I went to David's Bridal for my first wedding dress shopping experience. Despite all my previous hesitations, I was so glad I did it. I had so much fun, and I'm pretty sure my girls did too! Before I talk about my experience in trying on such beautiful dresses, I wanted to share with you some of my Lessons Learned from last Saturday.

1. Bring someone - But not a full entourage. Whatever you do, don't go alone, especially if it's your first time. Bring a few girls that you want to share this experience with. Not only will they provide you with emotional support but for practical reasons: taking notes, taking pictures, helping you in and out of dresses, etc. In my case, since it was a Saturday (and quite busy) my wedding consultant was helping two brides at a time. My MOH came into the dressing room with me and helped me put on (and take off) multiple gowns.

2. Don't wear make-up - Although this one is not truly a lessons learned, I think it's still a good tip. The morning of the appointment, I was tempted to put on make-up but, trust me, you won't want to. You'll be, most likely, maneuvering in a dressing room with another person, figuring out the best way to put on a particular dress. Smearing lipstick on your face (or the dress) is not something you should be worrying about while trying to find your dream dress.

3. Bring a notepad and pen/pencil - You will try on many, many dresses. There will be things you'll love and hate about them. Have someone with you taking notes, they might come in handy - especially if you want to take some time to decide which dress to choose or if you have multiple appointments.

4. Bring a camera - I know some places don't let you take pictures of the dresses you try on, but David's Bridal does. If the store you go to allows you to take pictures, go ahead and bring your camera. Trust me, you will want to document this experience! It will also help you make a decision on a dress, since you can go back and look at all the dresses you tried on from a different perspective.

5. Do your homework in advance - Check out the store's website and bring your favorite dresses with you. This will save a lot of time and will make it easier for you and your bridal consultant. It will give her an idea of what you're looking for and gives you the chance to try on the dresses you loved. You won't be able to try on every single one (time flies!) but it will definitely narrow down your search for your top ones!

6. Double-check everything - This is my single most important lesson learned of all: Ask questions, even if you have already asked them. If I had done this, it would have saved me a mini-heart attack two days after ordering the dress. We are all human, including bridal consultants, we all make mistakes. Confusion can happen, especially on a busy morning at the store. If you try on a dress you love twice, and the first time you asked if it came without a train and they said no, ask again the second time you try it on. Trust me, it won't hurt to double-check.

7. Don't be afraid to ask - The worst that can happen is that they say no. Although it sounds similar to #6, this is in a completely different context. When I was ordering my dress, and prior to me signing the receipt, they told me that "all sales are final." Two days later, I found out there was an option in the color of the dress although I was told at the time that it only came in one color. Despite what they had told me before ordering the dress, I called the store to find out if the dress did come in a second color and, if so, could I please change the dress to that second color. Don't let whatever they tell you at the store stop you from asking! Trust me, I sat at my desk for 10 or 15 minutes deciding whether to call or not. I almost didn't call, and, if I hadn't, I would have missed out in having my absolutely dream gown.

What are some of your lessons learned from your own dress shopping experience?

DIY Paper Lanterns

I love paper lanterns! I used to have one in my bedroom back in Puerto Rico, until I came home one weekend during college and it had mysteriously disappeared! (Yes, I firmly believe the answer that my mom gave me, the lamp broke, while hanging by itself in the ceiling, with nothing around it, in my possibly 9 feet tall ceiling, yes, I do believe it)

I wish I had seen this back then, it looks so simple and so easy to do!

Wouldn't these look gorgeous at a wedding reception? Or maybe a bridal shower? I think these could be made for any occasion! Just pick the flowers (or any accessories) in the desired colors, and you can have a simple yet beautiful piece of decoration for your bash! You can find the step-by-step article here.

How would you use these? Have you come across simple decorations that can work for any occasion?

Taking the First Step

For finding my dress! Okay, I few days ago I shared my very odd dress-related dream. After writing about it, I felt better and called David's Bridal to schedule an appointment. I asked for a Saturday morning and they had a 10:30am for this Saturday, so I took it.I told my girls, and they got all excited about it! We're even going to make a day of it. While me and the girls go dress shopping, the mister and my BM's boyfriend will hang-out and do something manly (my guess? Video games). Afterward, we'll meet back home for awesome food and a movie marathon.

I'm still somewhat nervous but just today I read this post by Miss Dachshund at Weddingbee. I can understand her as I feel the way she does. I've always had insecurities about the way I look. I know it'll take time, but I know that, eventually, I'll be comfortable in my own skin. I have the wonderful support of the mister and my girls.

In preparation of Saturday, I've looked at every dress in the David's Bridal website and selected my favorites. I have many, and I still have to narrow the list down for Saturday. I think I'd like to determine my Top 10 and, hopefully, try on my Top 5. I'm not sure how these appointments are like, so I'd rather be prepared!

These are some of my favorite dresses that I saw at their website. Who knows? Maybe one of these is the one!

How many favorite dresses did you bring in to your dress appointment? Did you find your dream dress on your first try?

Michaels Bounty

A few days ago, I posted about my wanderings around Michaels and all the beautiful items I saw on the aisles. I didn't buy any of them, but I did buy other things, which I promised would be in another post. And like we say back home, lo prometido es deuda*! Here's my bounty!

Personal Picture

I found these in an aisle that was dedicated to metallic-looking objects (like silver journals, golden lipstick holders, etc). These little guys were only $1 each, so I promptly snatched 15 of them! What am I planning to do with these, you ask? Well, right now the plan is to use them for table numbers, but, if they turn out to be too small (they are only a few inches tall), I'm sure I can find another use for them! Like, if we do decide to do a candy buffet, these would be perfect to hold the names of the candies displayed.

So the plan is to spray-paint them in an antiquey-looking** gold, cut out numbers in chocolate brown and use pale pink for the background. Of course, the colors of the background and numbers can be switched around if need be ;-)

What would you do with these little frames?

*Translation: A promise is a promise
**Note: My dear MB, I think I just made up a word!

Jillian Kicked my Ass

Today was one of those days in which I just wanted to get home after work. So I did, I skipped the gym (again, although, in my defense, I've been missing because I haven't been feeling 100%) and drove straight home. Feeling that guilt of missing a work out, I decided to break open my 30 Day Shred DVD.

The same DVD that I bought back in July and had not even tore the plastic wrapping off. Why did I wait seven months to open the DVD, you ask? I was terrified of it. And with good reason! I did the Level 1 20-minute work out. How did I do?

Jillian. Kicked. My. Ass.

Yep, she did. And she did a very thorough job of it. I could not do the work out for those 20 minutes straight. I had to stop several times to catch my breath. Did I finish it? Kinda. Did I quit? Not really. Am I a masochist? Maybe... it'll depend if I'm brave enough to try the work out again tomorrow.  Of course, it depends if I can get out of bed tomorrow.

How about you? Did Jillian (or any other fitness DVD trainer) kick your ass? Or are you kicking ass?

An Evening of Michaels Wandering

A couple weeks ago I stopped at Michaels on my way home after work. I spent a good hour (could have been an hour and a half) browsing the entire store, just seeing what they had, hoping that inspiration would hit me. Okay, so I would have been happy with inspiration bumping into me or just brushing me on the side. I'm not picky! But it did so much more than that!

I found aisles bursting with the beige and soft pink palette I desperately want for our wedding. I could have easily spend the night just admiring the goods (I swear, I have not been drinking), and Michaels has a lot to offer.

I know I don't want flowers for centerpieces (I'm still deciding whether or not I want a bouquet made of real flowers), and I know I want candles, candles, and more candles. And I'd like to add butterflies as accents to the decorations. And thinking along those lines, I saw these possibilities at the store.

Imagine candle pillars burning in this gorgeous stand, or maybe a mini-terrarium (think moss on the bottom, small branches with butterflies perched on them) surrounded by tea light candles on the table.

Or how about one of these lovely lanterns in the middle of the table, with a cute butterfly perched on top, surrounded by even more tea light candles on the table?

Or perhaps three of these candle holders (taller one in the middle with a shorter one at each side), providing dimension with its different heights as well as a soft, romantic glow?

How unbelievably beautiful and delicate are these? I saw these and all I wanted to do was break out the credit card and buy them all! Adorable butterflies in our wedding colors!!

Sadly, I was very strong and did not take out my credit card to buy any of these items (oh, how difficult that was, trust me!). However, I did take out my credit card to purchase a few items that I simply could not pass up. And those, my friends, will be another post ;-)

Where do you find inspiration for your wedding decor? Do you find yourself browsing your favorite craft store aisle by aisle?

Note: All pictures were taken by me, using my phone, and I'm finally uploading them to my computer thanks to my recent trip to Best Buy, where I purchased (finally!) a micro SD card.
